Happy Valentine’s Day to all. If you’ve got somebody, enjoy that. Iyou don’t, well, enjoy that too. ‘Cause a Hallmark holiday is just an excuse to spend money and have a good time. And I think that’s a great thing.

This is my first Valentine’s Day as an ENGAGED person. Looking forward to seeing mi corazon later on tonight….

ABOVE: Clear lil’ video I learned about through the folks at Good Experience.

Inspired by the 24-7 DIY Media Summit, I created my very own first viral video tonight. And it’s about our cat.

It’s a lil’ mash up involving music from Kurious George’s Jorge’s “I’m Curious” off the dope old skool album A Constipated Monkey. Enjoy.

UPDATE: My USC guest faculty homie Andrew just pulled my hip hop card by pointing out my misspelling above.  My hip hop cred may never recover. (Thanks for the tip!)

DIY vs. DIT

At a session entitled “Envisioning the future of DIY.” Remarkable crew including Henry Jenkins, Joi Ito (“Internet Poster Boy”), John Seely Brown, Yochai Benkler and Howard Rheingold. I’m ready for my brain to explode from it all.

Lots of interesting points made, many of which you would see here if the battery life of the Toshiba Satellite wasn’t horsesh#$.

One interesting point was around the phrase DIY.  Is that really the best we can do?

DIY = Do It Yourself

DIT = Do It Together

At a session called Otaku Remixes: Anime Music Videos, featuring a collection curated by Tim Park. Otaku simply means a fan of anime content. While I’m a total nube when it comes to anime, I gotta admit the first couple videos I witnessed are pretty fly.

Watch some of the best and vote for your favorites at http://www.animemusicvideos.org.

Here’s one cool example of a well-known anime mashup music video mixing up some footage from Dragonball Z and a Tyler Durden-inspired Dust Brothers track.

Here’s another one called Tainted Donuts. Get through the intro to hear a dope Japanese hip hop track from Shaka Zombie. Beat and energy is reminiscent of Young Black Teenagers’ “Tap the Bottle.”

Who knew hip hop and anime got down like this? Peep “It’s Tricky to Make a Music Video,” featuring the kings Run DMC.

This is actually starting to blow me away.  I mean, g*$damn, where do you get to mash up Ninja Rap, Luda, Weird Al,  movie trailer bits, and more.  Right here, that’s where…  Seriously this is at least as funny as anything Will Ferrell and those guys are gonna give ya.

I wanna make some -ish like that! Maybe a mashup involving Digital Underground’s “FOTI.”  Who wants to help? Worth three weeks of my life? Uh, maybe I’ll just stay on YouTube.

Props to my M80 homeboy Fast Freddie for rollin’ out to the summit and inspiring me to check out something new.

DIY? Yes, please

video 24-7

At the 24/7, a DIY Video Summit, hosted at the USC campus.  Great agenda overall with lots of thought leaders in the space, including Howard Rheingold and Larry Lessig. It’s a three day smorgasbod of video goodness for academics and videophiles.  I’m just stopping through a few Saturday sessions that are open to the general public.

The first really interesting tidbit I’ve heard is that there are more hours of content on YouTube than in the entire history of network television.  In just two years.  And that’s just YouTube.

Do you have any fave DIY videos?

Blogger out sick with Dengue Fever

Dengue

Don’t cry. Really. It’s hurt to see you cry. I care about you soooo much. … Good. That’s better.

There’s no need to be sad. The blog is back. Here’s a quick look at what I’ve been up to since my last post:

  • 1/30 – Flew up to San Jose today to meet with a potential client on a big B2B product launch. Great group up there, including LaSandra who runs an insightful blog called Marketing in a Web 2.0 World.
  • 1/31 – M80 Music’s favorite and very own Dengue Fever rocked it out KCRW style at The Echoplex. My cuz Piz and buddy Vza rolled with me. Dope world music. Cheap/free vodka w/ energy drink. Good times. Had some amazing ’street meat’ after the show. If you haven’t been to LA yet and eaten a bacon-wrapped hot dog cooked and sold on the street, then you have not lived. And this is coming from a former multi-year vegetarian.
  • 2/1-2/3 – Rolled to Riverside for some R&R with my fiance, after spending some time with the union peeps out there. Had a great time just kicking back, attending a Charles Dickens community festival, and eating yummy food at Tio’s Tacos. Highly recommended.
  • 2/3 – Super Bowl Sunday. Giants? Eh. Patriots? Hate ‘em. Finally the Patriots lose. Anything bad that every happens to them is the result of karma from the Stolen Glory that came at the expense of my Oakland Raiders. F*$% you, Tom Brady. The only saving grace are grassroots efforts such as this and this. …. (thx Emily & Reagan for hosting an excellent Stuper Bowl celebration.)
  • 2/5 – Another Tuesday, another APOC class. Cory led the class on virtual worlds and he sums it up well on his blog.
  • 2/7 – Widgets. You want one. Your mom wants one. Everyone wants one. See some great samples from Gigya here. Met with Ben from up north on Thursday and loved what he had to show us. Looking forward to doing some killer campaigns together.

Have a great weekend!
